URGENT CAUSEBefore the COVID-19 pandemic and resulting shutdowns, the statistics for South Africa (2017) show that 6.8 million people were already living under impoverished conditions, experiencing hunger and affecting 1.7million households. In addition to this, a significant percentage of the population already has compromised health due to HIV and tuberculosis. The COVID-19 pandemic has created extreme food shortages. Despite huge drive by government municipalities, private and civil sectors, there is just not enough food to go around. The Mhlaba Foundation is a non-profit organization, working urgently to provide food to areas hardest hit by the shutdown.PANELISTSGolden Globe Race 2022 entrant and skipper of “Pelagic”, Kirsten Neuschäfer, is a South African and lives in Eastern Cape. With the unwavering support of the KirstenGGR Team she has put fundraising for the Golden Globe Race aside for the moment, and shifted focus on trying to help the Raymond and Dideka Mhlaba Foundation to raise funds for food distribution in some of the areas worst affected in Port Elizabeth and the Eastern Cape. Bertie Gregory is an exceptionally accomplished wild-life filmmaker, who has produced some astonishing wildlife documentaries for National Geographic and has worked on some of BBC’s finest series, such as “Frozen Planet”, “Planet Earth” and “Seven Worlds”. In 2017 he organized a film shoot to South Georgia for a series which he produced for National Geographic “Resurrection Island”. Kirsten, Bertie and his team sailed “Pelagic” in and around some of South Georgia’s wildest and most stunning anchorages and bays.
Wildlife camerawoman Erin Ranney will be hosting the webinar. Erin was a member of Bertie Gregory’s film crew during their trip to South Georgia.
With special thanks to:
